Sailor Jarda Suchopar just sent me the following YouTube video. We first saw his re-purposed-boat-to-tri conversion featured in this post.

This vid features his small trimaran camping-cruise on the Stockholm Archipelago and Mälaren Lake in 2017.

Wow … what a sailing venue! The takeaway from this video is to go camp-cruising along quaint small European towns where you always have access to great scenery, food and beverages :-)

Thanks for sharing this with us Jarda!

Searunner 25 Sailing Around the Gulf of Mexico This Winter

Sailor John Ebert and his Searunner 25 trimaran are in Florida for a few months this winter. So neat!

He is currently living aboard and daysailing (with his cat along no less too), and just messing about the Gulf near Panama City. He has also been having some fun exploring nearby shoalwaters and bayous.

Oh, and be sure to check out the pics of John’s outboard motor controller he has from the cockpit.

He has put sooooooooo much work into this boat during the restoration process. I told him he just may have the most “souped-up” Searunner 25 in the world!

Regarding the outboard motor setup, John says:

I converted a Nissan 4 hp 4 stroke outboard (now Tohatsu) to remote control from the center cockpit! It is marvelous!

It makes landing into the marina slip single-handed at least possible with minimum mayhem, and super fun to just drive around like a motor boat!

I get one hour on .4 gallons of gas so my 3.5 gallon tank in the aft anchor hatch should get me about 35 miles? Yet to see….but on my list to measure.

Multihull designer Petr Podobsky is the proprietor of Czech Multihulls. He reached out to me via email a few days ago.

Petr has designed a 25 foot trimaran and is offering free building plans to someone who is wants to build their a Farrier type of folding trimaran with free support from him.

He’d obviously like to showcase a fully-built boat for proof-of-concept and advertising purposes. And his offer for free plans plus consultation may be a good match for just the right person(s).

You can read more about the CM-25 trimaran here. And you can read more about Petr’s offer for free plans and builder support here.

Sailor Aurelio P. recently shared some pictures of his newest trimaran for the small tri class he has worked to develop. It’s a new 10-foot trimaran for next 2018 season.

When completed, it will feature a mainsail and jib and furling gennaker. I’ve pulled 3 pics from his site (see below). But you can see all of them by visiting http://www.diecipiedi.it/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=654&whichpage=6

I really love the look of the netting material for the trampolines too. I asked Aurelio where he got it. He told me to visit www.spraystore.it and then, on the left menu, first click on “Tele & Vele” … and then click on “Teleria” ( at the top of the new page).

Check it all out. (And thanks for sharing this with us Aurelio :-)

I think the title “Masoala” indicates that the camp-cruise of these trimarans took place at the Masoala National Park in Madagascar.

Great videos here. Just pure fun.

Nothing else.

Sailing and swimming and fishing and eating and enjoying life … with a couple small trimarans.

And thanks to Stefano for letting me know about them!

Building Boats with Carbon Fiber Cloth

Is it hard to build a small trimaran (or any small boat) using carbon fiber? I don’t know because I’ve never done it.

I’m tempted though. I got an email from Duckworks today advertising the carbon fiber cloth they’re selling in their store right now.

If you, dear reader, have some experience building a small boat in this cutting-edge material then think about sharing your opinion about it (in the comments area below).

Here are a couple YouTube vids about working with carbon fiber:

Ian Farrier Passes Away

I found out yesterday that multihull designer Ian Farrier recently passed away. His innovative designs and business acumen were well respected.

Thanks to Small Tri friend Thom Davis for sharing the below article from Sailingscuttlebutt.com with us.

……………

Eight Bells: Ian Farrier

Ian Farrier, a visionary multihull designer best known for his folding trailerable trimarans, died at age 70 on December 10, 2017.

Ian Farrier first started sailing multihulls virtually by accident, being a twenty year old New Zealand engineering student and monohull sailor, looking for a keelboat to do some offshore cruising.

Nothing suitable was available, but then an unfinished 30-foot trimaran was advertised, and this was purchased after some research. After two years of hard work and rebuilding, his first multihull was launched in 1969.

The Tribaby 17 Trimaran

One of our readers (Alex S.) sent me the link to a 17-foot trimaran I’ve never seen before. It’s from boat designer Matt Cooper, who calls it the Tribaby 17.

After corresponding with Matt a bit via email he gave permission to post some info and and a couple pics from his website.

Building plans for this boat are available. You can readily contact him for more information.

The Tribaby 17 is a “beach tri” in the fullest sense. Included in Matt’s description of this sailboat is the following:

The TRIBABY is definitely a bathing suit boat as you sit out on the cross arms with your feet in the main hull. Having designed and built various types of boats over the years, we have found that the trimaran has several advantages over more conventional single hull craft including high stability, low resistance, shoal draft, light displacement (no need for ballast), all while still preserving the practicality of a center hull.

The Comet 21 Trimaran

In this post we feature the Comet 21 Trimaran design from Matt Cooper. His 17 foot beach tri can be seen in the previous post.

As is the case with his smaller beach tri, building plans are also available for this sailboat. (They’re not pricey either)!

About this larger, 21-footer, Matt writes an ample description, which includes the following:

“The main hull (vaka) is multi-chined with a narrow flat bottom, graceful stem profile, and vertical stern to carry the kick-up rudder. The boat is built of marine plywood over a light spruce frame. The topsides are ¼” (6mm) while the bottom and decks are 3/8” (9mm). The main hull features a small cuddy cabin forward, a storage compartment aft, and a self-bailing center cockpit.”

With his permission are a couple Comet 21 pics (see more on his webpage)

As you can see for yourself, the amas on this boat are very Newick-esque. See Matt’s design bio here.

I recently had the opportunity to check out 3 new sailing-related products from Windrider. In my opinion, they all appear to be excellent quality and functional. I’ve written reviews for all 3 on Amazon.

The first is a “dry bag,” the second is a “shirt” and the third is “water shoes.” Here are a few pics, right after they arrived at my home:

Boating Fun at PTWatercraft

Russell Brown, the all-around waterman and boat designer at Port Townsend Watercraft, is still showing lots of people the techniques for building great boats. He has become a great teacher in this area via his ebooks.

Russell and his wife Ashlyn have also produced some very interesting videos of late that showcase the kits they sell, including a sailing nesting dinghy. Here is an example:

The building techniques Russell teaches certainly apply to building small trimarans in wood. Here is what I wrote about Russell’s ebooks a couple years back.

Triple Joy Tandem Trimaran

A couple sailors in Greece — Kosmas and Dora — are building a neat looking trimaran design they refer to as TRIPLE JOY. They’re blogging about it, but their blog includes more than the boat. According to their posts it seems they want to show a good bit of Greek’s coastal waters.

I am not sure if they’re planning to offer any building plans for this trimaran to others if it turns out to be a great sailboat. But I’d think anyone interested could certainly inquire.

Thanks to smalltri friend Alex Stick for sharing about this boat with us! :-)

See more about the TRIPLE JOY on their blog here.

Their YouTube channel, which includes their videos to date, can be seen here. It includes the below video:
